Hong Kong or Shenzhen Dentist? How to Decide by Treatment Type
David Lin · Updated 24 Sept 2026 · 5 min read
There is no single right answer to "Hong Kong or Shenzhen?" The most useful way to decide is by type of treatment. Treatments done in one visit with little follow-up carry low risk across the border. Treatments that need many visits and long-term follow-up need more thought about what happens if something goes wrong. Here is a comparison, category by category, using public information.
How big is the price gap?
Economic Digest reported in September 2026 that dental fees in Shenzhen are generally 60–80% lower than in Hong Kong. From the published prices we have collected:
| Treatment | Hong Kong private clinics | Shenzhen (RMB) |
|---|---|---|
| Scaling | HK$500–700 | About ¥50–130 |
| Filling | HK$600–1,500 | About ¥140–999 |
| Root canal (per tooth) | HK$4,000–8,000 | About ¥1,000–3,000 |
| Crown | HK$4,500–8,500 | About ¥1,880–6,980 |
| Single implant | From HK$17,000 | About ¥7,000 all-in at public hospitals |
Sources and dates for every figure are on Hong Kong dental fees at a glance. Note that for scaling and fillings the difference is in the hundreds of dollars; only implants and braces reach the tens of thousands.
Deciding by treatment type
| Treatment | Visits | Follow-up needed | What to weigh for Shenzhen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check-up, scaling | Usually one | Low | Small saving once travel and time are counted; some GBA institutions accept vouchers |
| Filling | Usually one per tooth | Low to medium | If it's uncomfortable or falls out, you need to go back |
| Root canal | Usually several, often followed by a crown | Medium to high | More than half of the overseas follow-up cases Hong Kong dentists see involve root canals |
| Implant | Several, over 3–6 months or more | High, with long-term maintenance | Implants are 67% of follow-up cases; you need the implant brand and model |
| Braces, clear aligners | Treatment lasts years, with regular reviews | High; retainers afterwards | Many review visits; broken or lost retainers must be remade |
The follow-up figures come from the Hong Kong Dental Association's November 2025 survey of more than 200 private dentists (reported by RTHK). For implant healing times, see the Department of Health's oral health page (Chinese).
Shenzhen's advantages
- Price: list prices are clearly lower for most treatments, and public-hospital implants are under a national service-fee cap (see Hong Kong or Shenzhen for implants).
- Vouchers: Elderly Health Care Vouchers can be used at HKU-Shenzhen Hospital and designated GBA pilot institutions (see using vouchers in Shenzhen).
- Booking: many hospitals take WeChat bookings, and some have Cantonese-speaking staff.
Hong Kong's advantages
- Easy follow-up: reviews, emergencies and maintenance happen nearby, with no border crossing.
- One regulator: Hong Kong dentists must register with the Dental Council and follow one professional code. The Consumer Council notes that the mainland has no independent statutory body specifically regulating dentists or dental clinics.
- Records in one place: treatment records and X-rays stay together, which helps if you ever change dentist.
- Subsidies: eligible people can use the Community Dental Support Programme, Elderly Health Care Vouchers, and school and teen schemes (see subsidy schemes).
Five questions to ask yourself
- How many visits does this treatment need, and can I make them?
- After travel and time, how much do I actually save?
- If something goes wrong, will I go back to the original provider or see a dentist in Hong Kong?
- Can I get complete records (X-rays, implant details, receipts)?
- Am I eligible for any Hong Kong subsidy?

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth going to Shenzhen just for scaling?
The price difference for scaling is usually a few hundred dollars, which travel and time can easily cancel out. It's different if you cross the border often anyway, or can use vouchers.
Which treatments most often need follow-up in Hong Kong?
The Hong Kong Dental Association's survey found that among follow-up cases after treatment outside Hong Kong, implants accounted for 67%, root canals more than half and fillings about half.
Is Shenzhen always cheaper than Hong Kong?
List prices are lower for most treatments, but count the whole course: number of trips, extra items and the cost of dealing with problems.
Are there cheaper options in Hong Kong?
Yes. Eligible people can use the Community Dental Support Programme, Elderly Health Care Vouchers, and school and teen schemes. Prince Philip Dental Hospital's teaching-patient fees are also low, though patients are selected.
