Having a set of white, straight teeth certainly enhances a smile, so many people consider orthodontic treatment. Various orthodontic methods are available on the market, and recently, social media and online platforms have been widely promoting and advocating the use of self-service or semi-self-service invisible braces. However, some dentists point out that orthodontic treatment without a dentist or orthodontist's consultation is not only ineffective but can also lead to serious complications such as tooth necrosis and gum recession.
Social media is promoting self-service or semi-self-service invisible braces products.
The Hong Kong Dental Association and the Hong Kong Orthodontic Society previously issued a statement noting that social media has been widely promoting and advocating the use of self-service or semi-self-service invisible braces. They emphasized that orthodontic treatment is a professional dental procedure, and if part or the entire process lacks the professionalism, diagnosis, and progress monitoring of a registered dentist, it may affect the treatment outcome and increase the treatment risk, directly impacting the oral health of the public.
In an interview, Dr. Tsang Hin-kei, president of the Hong Kong Dental Association, stated that orthodontic treatment generally takes several months to two years, with some more complex cases requiring approximately two to three years, depending on the specific case and its complexity. He explained that, for example, invisible braces typically cost starting at HK$40,000, depending on whether it's for a child or adult, the complexity of the orthodontic treatment, and the dentist's experience. The association noted that advertisements on social media, often without dentists listed, range from HK$10,000 to HK$20,000, and the actual cost remains unclear.
The orthodontic process must be closely monitored by the dentist.
Zeng Xianji stated that the so-called semi-self-service invisible braces are plastic braces manufactured by certain companies that simulate tooth alignment using computer programs and then create them based on tooth movement.
" It is extremely dangerous to use self-service or semi-self-service clear aligners without the supervision of a dentist or orthodontist. "
He explained that moving teeth is a very complex process, and the time required for orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. Therefore, braces designed to simulate tooth movement cannot possibly achieve the alignment and movement predicted by a computer simulation. Close monitoring and management by a dentist are necessary throughout the treatment period. Inappropriate tooth movement during the process can lead to serious complications, such as exposed tooth roots, tooth necrosis, and gum recession.
Complications may prevent the preservation of dental health.
Tseng Hsien-chi cautioned that seeking dental care only when complications arise may not restore teeth to a healthy state. Furthermore, without a dentist's intervention during the process, there is often no recourse for complaints. In addition, there are numerous legal cases abroad involving the adverse effects of self-made or semi-self-made invisible braces.
Self-service or semi-self-service orthodontic products carry risks.
Tseng Hsien-chi reminds everyone that a thorough examination by a dentist or orthodontist, as well as an X-ray, is necessary before undergoing orthodontic treatment. He cautions that periodontal disease is difficult to detect, and individuals with pre-existing periodontal disease may experience a worsening of their condition by using self-service or semi-self-service clear aligners. Furthermore, alveolar bone issues can affect the progress of orthodontic treatment. For example, a protruding chin, commonly known as a "shoe pick," may require jawbone surgery before braces can be administered.
Zeng Xianji advised citizens to seek treatment from dentists or orthodontists to protect their health, and not to blindly believe online advertisements. He emphasized that orthodontic treatment must be followed up by dentists or orthodontists, otherwise there are significant risks.
The Hong Kong Dental Association stated that it will closely monitor the situation and cooperate closely with all parties. When necessary, it will provide appropriate assistance and public education to prevent citizens from receiving inappropriate or substandard treatment and suffering losses.
